Oyugi was a local man with four children and a loving wife. They lived in a small house with a grass roof. Oyugi did not go to school, so he worked as a farmer to take care of his family. People in the village knew Oyugi well because he got angry very fast. His family, even his grandparents, had a bad reputation in the village.
One night, Oyugi came home from the market. He started a fight with his wife, who was pregnant with their fifth child. He said she was letting other men come into their house. He heard this from a friend, but his wife said it was not true. They argued loudly. Oyugi got very angry and began to hit his wife in front of their children and her youngest sister. The sister was living with them to help because of the pregnancy. Oyugi told the children and the sister to go to bed in another small house nearby.
After they left, Oyugi took a piece of wood and hit his wife again and again. She screamed, but no one could hear her because they lived far from other people. Only her children and sister could hear her cries, but they could not help. She begged Oyugi to stop because she did not want to lose her baby. But Oyugi kept hitting her. She started to bleed.
Then, Oyugi did something very terrible. He hurt her in a way that no one should ever do. After a while, his wife stopped moving. Oyugi tried to wake her up by kicking her and pouring cold water on her. But she did not wake up. He realized she was dead. He felt scared and worried.
That same night, Oyugi walked two kilometers to his oldest brother’s house and asked for help. His brother told him to run away to a nearby village. The next day, the village found Oyugi’s wife’s body. She was cold and naked, lying in blood and water. She was buried with her unborn baby a few days later. Even though many people knew what really happened, no one told the police. So, Oyugi was not punished.
After some time passed, Oyugi came back to the village like nothing had happened. He moved to a new home just a few miles away from where it happened. What shocked everyone was that Oyugi married his late wife’s sister. Now, they have four children together!
